A new slate of government officials begins work following swearing-in ceremonies January 1 with one village trustee facing unique challenges over other elected officials: maintaining his grade-point average and managing a commute from campus to make board meetings.

In Johnson City, a 19-year-old SUNY Oneonta student and a former candidate for Village Mayor each take seats on the Village Board.

Johnson City High School grad., Benjamin Reynolds and former trustee Martin Meaney took their oaths of office.

Reynolds becomes Broome County’s youngest elected official.  He’s a full-time college student and will be balancing his studies with village business, commuting to meetings about twice a month.  The first Johnson City Village Board meeting is scheduled for January 15.

Also sworn in January, Democrat Rick Materse starts his work as Union Town Supervisor, calling for everyone to work together following a year of controversy surrounding outgoing supervisor Rose Sotak.  The Republican was accused of harassing and intimidating Town employees and chose not to seek reelection.
