Many Broome County Republican voters will cast their ballots at a different site for the Congressional primary election.

The county Board of Elections has consolidated polling places for Tuesday's primary.

George Phillips, Claudia Tenney and Steve Wells are vying for the GOP nomination for the 22nd District Congressional seat.

Karen Davis, the Republican deputy election commissioner, said 34 polling places will be in operation for the primary election. That compares to 114 polling places typically open across the county.

Davis said the county consolidated polling places for the Congressional primary two years ago.

40,481 registered Republicans are eligible to vote in Tuesday's primary. 995 absentee ballots were mailed by the Board of Elections. As of Monday afternoon, 475 of those ballots had been returned.

Two years ago, only 17 percent of the eligible Republicans in the county voted in the Congressional primary. A low turnout also is expected in this year's primary.

In the April presidential primaries, 42 percent of those eligible in Broome County voted. On the Binghamton University campus in Vestal, 72 percent of those who were eligible turned out for on April 19.
