Broome County legislators are considering a proposal that would regulate the use of local roads by heavy trucks.

Lawmakers have maintained that the measure is not directed specifically at the possible future development of natural gas drilling in the area and the spike in truck traffic that would result.  Officials say the regulations would also apply to existing businesses that used and produce wear on local roads.

The county is considering a $50 permit fee for a single vehicle and $250 for a company's entire fleet.

The money could then be used for road repair and maintenance.
