The Broome County Sheriff’s Office reports over 800 pounds of expired and unwanted medications have been collected and safely disposed of between last October and March.

The department also partnered with the Broome County Office for Aging in April and May to visit senior centers and collected an additional 800 pounds of drugs for disposal.

The Sheriff’s Office is able to destroy the medicines in an environmentally safe method and keep substances out of the hands of people who may want to illegally use it.

The drugs are taken to an incinerator facility in Oswego for destruction.

The Sheriff’s Office has a Medication Drop Box located at the Public Safety Building next to SUNY Broome Community College available weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All types of medications are accepted except needles or any type of “sharps.”
