Both new governmental budget proposals presented in Broome County are calling for a tax increase.

County Executive Debra Preston’s $365 million plan calls for a tax levy increased of 2.49%.  That’s still below the state tax cap.

Preston cited unfunded mandates from the state and continued rising costs for the increase.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David’s first budget to go before a city council comes in at $91 million, increases the tax levy .49% and adds three police officers.

Some Council members say they will go over the budget very carefully as they questioned how much grants could fill the spending requests without increasing taxes more.
