9:18 PM Update: The Broome County Office of Emergency services say that the 911 system and 7-digit police and administrative lines have been restored.  All lines have been tested and Verizon is investigating the cause of the outage.

A telephone system failure is affecting the Broome County 911 Center.

In an emergency, dispatchers may be reached by calling 607.778.1183.

Problems were reported with 911 calls and many seven-digit police agency phone numbers in the county.

Verizon, TW Telecom and Cassidian employees were working to determine what was causing the problem.

Broome County 911 calls were being diverted to a backup system because of the issue.
