Several blocks of Clinton Street in Binghamton's First Ward were closed early this afternoon after a report of a "suspicious" device.

City police closed the busy street between Glenwood Avenue and Colfax Avenue.

Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.

The Endicott police department bomb squad was called to the scene near Saint Michael's Church at 296 Clinton Street.

The bomb unit examined the item and determined it contained no explosives.

Trains on nearby railroad tracks had been halted during the police operation.

Clinton Street was reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.
