The directive for users of the Endicott water system remains in effect after a 24-inch line broke Tuesday evening.

Mayor John Bertoni called the break on Harrison Avenue the "granddaddy of ruptures."

Some village water customers experienced low pressure and discolored water.

The water problem resulted in the cancellation of classes on Wednesday in the Union-Endicott and Maine-Endwell school districts.

Bertoni said "it was a long night" for water department crews who worked to repair the broken line.

The mayor said a milling and repaving project was recently completed on the street where the water main ruptured. He said a "couple of connectors" were installed when that work was done.

Bertoni said a lengthy section of water line needed to be replaced following the break. Repair work was being completed Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Broome County Health Department, the boil water order covers everyone served by the Endicott Water District. The affected area includes the village of Endicott, as well as sections of Endwell and West Corners.
