Some Endicott residents were surprised by a black bear that spent some time near some homes and businesses.

Village police officers managed to steer the bear away from residential neighborhoods after it was first noticed on Adams Avenue late Sunday night.

Police assisted by firefighters kept an eye on the bear as it wandered along East Main Street.

Authorities estimated the bear's weight at up to 350 pounds.

They say the bear headed west and then south on Vestal Avenue before sauntering off toward the Susquehanna River.

There were no additional reports of people encountering the bear after it made it to the river area.
