According to a statement released by the university, the school's athletics department learned at around 4 p.m. Thursday (March 31) that a female member of the track team had been hurt.

Authorities say the shooting happened at a Greyhound bus station in Richmond. Virginia State Trooper Chad Dermyer died after he sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Virginia State Police Superintendent Steven Flaherty, Dermyer had been participating in a training operation at the bus station before he was shot. The trooper was shot by a man at close range.

Two nearby police officers fired at the gunman, killing him. Two civilian women, including the Binghamton University student, were injured.

The university statement indicated the student's injuries were not life-threatening. Arrangements were being made to make counselors available to the student and the other athletes who were with her.

The track team was heading to a meet in Williamsburg, Virginia.
