Officials at Binghamton University say close to 20,000 guests are expected at the Vestal campus starting for graduation ceremonies.

The first commencement is at 5 p.m. May 15 with the Graduate School of Education students receiving their degrees.

Over 3,000 students are receiving bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in ceremonies through May 17.

BU says the estimated economic impact on the Binghamton economy is $1.32 million as hotels are at full capacity and restaurants, especially along the Vestal Parkway will be extra-busy throughout the weekend.

Officials add the estimated economic impact for the Greater Binghamton Area, comprised of both Broome and Tioga Counties is put at $2.14 million and the contribution to the New York State economy is put at $2.92 million.

While most of the formal activities surrounding graduation take place on campus, motorists should be aware of the possibility of increased traffic in that area and also in areas where there is concentrated student residences, like the West Side of Binghamton, where students and family may be working on moving out of rented properties.
