Binghamton has been designated as an "Innovation and Economic Prosperity University" by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.

Binghamton University president Harvey Stenger said about 30 universities have now received the designation from the Washington-based organization.

Stenger said the recognition is a sign that Binghamton University is working to be "a great economic partner for the community."

The university submitted an application to the association outlining the efforts being made to spur economic development in the Southern Tier.

The overview included the work that's been done toward establishing a high-tech incubator in downtown Binghamton and the creation of a pharmacy school that will be based in Johnson City.

Stenger serves as co-chair of the Regional Economic Development Council. He said the just-announced recognition of the university's work to boost the area's economy will be included in the region's application in the upcoming competition for additional state economic development funding.
