Several hundred parking meters in downtown Binghamton are about to be replaced with payment kiosks.

The city plans to install the first five kiosks in about two months. The first units are to be placed on Hawley Street, Henry Street, State Street and Washington Street.

Mayor Richard David had announced the parking kiosk plan in his 2016 budget message. He plans to send the needed legislation for the pilot project to City Council at its next meeting.

The kiosks cover multi-space areas. The devices will accept cash and credit card payments.

The city expects to install a total of 50 kiosks at an estimated cost of $400,000. The same type of unit has been used for years on the Binghamton University campus in Vestal.

There now are about 800 parking meters in the downtown district. Most of them are to be replaced by the kiosks.
