The city program to upgrade the street lights should be completed within a few weeks.

On Thursday, workers were converting street lights to the new technology on Front Street.

Lights on downtown streets are expected to be the last to be upgraded.

The installation of the LED units on each pole can be accomplished quickly, usually in about three minutes.

The street light improvement program is expected to cost about $4 million.

City officials have said the new lights are up to seven times brighter per watt than the lights being replaced.

In 2014, street light operations cost the city more than $729,000. The more efficient LED lights are expected to reduce the street lighting bill.
