The city had spent millions of dollars in recent years trying to keep the deteriorating ramp in service. Officials had hoped to keep the garage open until at least 2018.

An engineering consultant determined it could cost millions more for work to make the facility safe.

About 40 percent of the ramp's 535 parking spaces were taken out of service last June because of crumbling concrete and other structural issues.

In a statement, Mayor Richard David said the demolition "will be costly and require extensive planning and coordination."

It's not known when the project to remove the structure will get underway or how long it will take.

Bid information regarding the demolition project is to be posted on the city government website on Friday.
