City school district officials say the track must be closed to accommodate equipment and crews which will be needed to build the $80 million school on Vestal Avenue.

Demolition of the flood-damaged MacArthur Elementary structure was completed last November.

While the walking track will be out of service, the adjacent city-operated MacArthur Park will remain open while the school construction is underway.

Binghamton parks and recreation director William Barber says the park pool will operate as usual during the nearby construction project.

Randy Brownell Field, which is used for Little League games, eventually will be relocated to the west of its current site.
