Binghamton Rolling Out Police Body Cameras

Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]Mayor Richard David said the first cameras were put into service on November 30.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said more officers will be utilizing the new equipment each week as the cameras are phased in.

The mayor said the camera deployment will be completed early next month.

David said the equipment is being put into service gradually so any issues that develop may be "addressed as part of a roll-out."

The mayor said the program is more than just equipping officers with cameras and sending them out on the streets. He said "it's downloading the video, storing the video, accessing the video, labeling the video."

David said the body camera effort is "going well so far."

The city purchased 90 cameras and a support package for the project for about $116,000.
