A ceremony to honor Purple Heart recipients and veterans who live in the 22nd Congressional District will be held at a Binghamton American Legion Post.

Friday's event at Post 80 at 76 Main Street will be hosted by Congressman Richard Hanna.

Hanna's district is being declared a "Purple Heart Congressional District." According to his office, the proclamation honors those who live in the district who were awarded the Purple Heart Medal for their sacrifices defending the United States in battle.

According to Hanna's Washington office, the event also will serve as a ceremony of appreciation for all veterans and service members who live in the region.

Representatives of veterans' groups and local elected officials are expected to participate in the event. It's scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Friday.

Veterans Day is Monday.
