Several representatives from area faith, community and labor groups gathered in front of the Binghamton Federal Building calling on lawmakers to push for a budget that would do more to help those in need.

The demonstration was held at Henry and State Streets April 6 as part of what was billed as "Moral Monday."

Speakers said they believe the current federal spending proposals being discussed in Washington help the "wealthy and powerful" while punishing the needy.

The critics expressed concern that Congress will adopt what they describe as "another immoral federal budget."

Rev. Fred Brooks, Jr., a retired United Methodist Church pastor, said the spending being considered by lawmakers proves that "Washington puts large corporations, banks and billionaires above the poor and middle class."

Those who participated in the Binghamton event carried signs critical of United States foreign policy and tax breaks which benefit big business.
