Workers used a crane to lift tons of roofing materials for a major student housing complex in downtown Binghamton.

The construction operation affected traffic on two busy streets throughout much of Monday.

The crane initially was positioned on Chenango Street, just north of the Court Street roundabout. A section of Chenango Street was closed completely for part of the morning.

The lifting operation later was shifted to State Street because some of the materials were needed on the west side of the University Lofts project site.

Northbound traffic on State Street occasionally was halted so the construction materials could be safely moved by the crane.

The University Lofts project, which developers say will accommodate up to 191 people, is expected to be completed in just over three months.
