Hundreds are expected to move into downtown Binghamton's newest student housing complex this summer.

The former Press Building on Chenango Street is being converted into the Printing House Apartments.

General manager Jeff Horowitz said the project is on schedule to open on August 1.

Horowitz said the facility is expected to accommodate 271 residents. He said the goal is to have 100 percent occupancy for the fall semester.

Construction crews have been busy in recent weeks with exterior work on the 12-story tower. Cranes have been used to raise materials to the upper levels of the building.

Some of the work affected traffic on Chenango Street with occasional closures because of construction equipment.

The Press Building was constructed in 1904. It housed The Binghamton Press newspaper and other offices for several decades.

The structure later was renovated for use by a law firm and other businesses. But the building sustained heavy smoke and water damage when fire ripped through the neighboring Midtown Mall complex in December 2010.
