A Binghamton police officer has quit after being charged with driving while intoxicated just after reporting for duty.

According to the mayor's office, 33-year-old Christopher Stoeckel submitted his resignation Friday morning. The resignation was effective immediately.

The City Hall statement was released around 11:30 a.m.

It indicates Stoeckel was arrested by city police for DWI shortly after he came to work on Tuesday, October 16.

The statement reports Stoeckel was immediately suspended without pay.

Stoeckel is to be arraigned in Binghamton City Court.

The statement from the mayor's office advises the Police Department will have no further comment on Stoeckel's case.
