Binghamton officials are encouraging people to consider working as a city police officer.

The police department will hold an open house on Wednesday for prospective recruits.

Mayor Richard David said the city has been working to diversify the department. He said a work group recommended a series of steps to reach out to women and minorities.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said a police recruitment website - joinBPD.com - has been developed as a result of the recommendations.

The mayor said the city also is spreading the word via social media. Messages have been sent out on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to make people aware of job opportunities with the department.

David said a job recruitment fair is being held at City Hall on Wednesday [September 21] at 6 p.m.

The deadline to register for the next Civil Service police exam is September 28. The mayor said the exam is administered every two years. He said future police hiring decisions will be based on those with the highest scores from the upcoming exam.
