City of Binghamton Police cars are being outfitted with front and back cameras and software to record the data collected.

The cameras turn on when the officer activates the lights and siren on the patrol car and will record response to each call.

20 cars are being equipped with the cameras.  One will point at the road and the other record what’s going on in the back seat.  Two cars have been fitted so far.

Binghamton police are also equipped with body cameras to record officer interaction with the public.

The recordings are seen as a way to promote transparency in the Police Department as well as protect the public from wrongful action and officers from false claims of inappropriate conduct.
