A Binghamton man has been accused of lying to police when he claimed he was robbed and stabbed while walking on the West Side.

Authorities say 45-year-old Paul Michaletz was charged with robbery and making a punishable false written statement.

Investigators say Michaletz told police he was attacked early Saturday morning on Walnut Street.

Michaletz was treated for a stab wound at Wilson Medical Center after police were called to an Oak Street residence around 4:45 a.m.

Detectives say their investigation concluded Michaletz actually stole money from a 59-year-old man, who used a pocket knife to stab Michaletz once in the side.

Police say eight dollars was taken in the robbery. The cash wasn't recovered.

Michaletz was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and ordered held in Broome County Jail.

The other man was not charged.
