The cameras at downtown Binghamton parking garage aren't new but the signs alerting facility users to them have just been posted.

Drivers exiting the State Street garage now are greeted with bright yellow signs advising them to "SMILE-YOU'RE ON CAMERA." The cheerful warnings feature a smiley face.

A person familiar with the matter said the signs might serve as a deterrent for some mischief makers in the parking garage.

Garage employees frequently find themselves replacing wooden gates after vehicles plow through them.

The surveillance cameras were installed at the exits to the State Street garage when the facility began using automated equipment, replacing a person who took payments from users.

The proposed 2014 city budget includes $40,000 for a pay station at the State Street ramp. The spending plan also calls for a $15,000 appropriation for security cameras at the State Street and Collier Street parking garages.
