The city has placed an order for the patrol car cameras with Taser International.

Total cost for the cameras and a five-year data storage plan will be about $47,000.

Forty police cars will have the equipment. Each vehicle will have two cameras. One will face toward the road and the other will be aimed at the back seat of the car.

About $37,000 in state funding will be used toward the camera system initiative. Nearly $9,700 will come from the police department's operating budget.

The city has utilized only one patrol car camera. That unit was in the police department's DWI enforcement vehicle.

The Binghamton police bureau in recent months put 90 body-worn cameras into service. Those cameras are utilized by street officers.
