The City of Binghamton will be moving forward with a project to develop a power grid to keep essential services like police, fire, hospital and government offices operating in an emergency.  Binghamton is the winner of a million dollars in the New York Prize Microgrid Competition.

This puts the City past the first two of three phases for the project. In the first phase, the City was awarded 100-thousand dollars to become part of the study.

If the project advances to the end, the City would get five million dollars to build an independent power source, driven, in part by the Rockbottom Dam.

Officials say they expect to learn next year if Binghamton is given the go-head to develop the project.
