Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]Binghamton Mayor Richard David has advised Republican party officials that he doesn't want to be considered for the state Senate seat vacated by Thomas Libous.

In a statement released on Sunday, David said he had "received a great deal of encouragement" to run for the seat after Libous was convicted of a felony of lying to the FBI.

The mayor said he "made a commitment" to Binghamton residents and he wants to complete the agenda he's developed.

On Saturday, Tioga County businessman Denver Jones said he will be seeking the Republican party nomination for the Senate seat. Jones challenged Libous in a GOP primary last September.

Jones said he will seek the nomination of several political parties for the special election to be held on November 3.
