A 32-acre property in Binghamton's First Ward has space available for up to six new businesses. Mayor Richard David wants the city to be able to take ownership and start marketing the site.

Emerson Network Power remains the only business at the Charles Street Business Park. State economic development officials describe the site as a "state-of-the-art technology park."

The property is owned by the Broome County Industrial Development Agency.

The mayor said when companies are interested in locating in the region, they typically have looked at corporate parks and other sites outside the city first.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said "unfortunately, the reality is, the Charles Street Business Park is last stop on the tour" - if it's included at all.

The mayor said it's "problematic and it's something that we are concerned about." He said he would like the city to take the lead on the site and work to develop it.

David said the site is "prime real estate located in the heart of the First Ward" and it's ripe for redevelopment.

The mayor said "it's a goal of the city to acquire that parcel" so it can be marketed to potential tenants. He said "I don't believe that it receives the attention that it deserves."

David said he has the sense that the business park has been a "very, very low" priority by county development officials who have been more focused on vacant corporate park space in more rural areas.
