Maureen Marion, a United States Postal Service spokeswoman, says some trucks hauling mail bound for Binghamton were delayed this morning because of road closures.

Sections of Interstate 81 were shut down for a time because of multiple crashes and poor travel conditions.

Marion says efforts to use the New York State Thruway as part of an alternate route to transport Binghamton-area mail were thwarted when sections of that highway also were shut down.

Marion says it appeared most of the first-class mail destined for the Southern Tier arrived in Binghamton, although some Express Mail had been delayed.

Marion says carriers were "making every attempt" to deliver as much mail as possible despite hazardous road conditions and slippery sidewalks.
