Binghamton Mayor Richard David has appointed members to a new commission he hopes will address the issue of homeless veterans in the community.

The Mayor has signed an agreement with the field officer for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Jaime Forero.

15 members have been named to the commission to work with HUD to locate the displaced or homeless vets living in Binghamton and find permanent dwelling for them.

Several veterans, like former Binghamton City Clerk, Joe Merrill have been named to the commission as well as officials dealing with housing issued in the region, including the director of the Binghamton Housing Authority, David Tannehaus, representatives of veterans support groups as well as several city administration officials are also among those serving on the panel.

Officials said there are many factors playing into veterans becoming homeless including poverty, lack of family support, substance abuse or mental health challenges.
