The Binghamton area unemployment rate last month was lower than a year earlier.

According to the state Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the Binghamton market - which includes Broome and Tioga counties - dropped to 7.7 percent. That's down from 8.9 percent in June 2012.

Tompkins and Saratoga counties shared the lowest unemployment rates last month. The jobless rate in each of those counties was 5.7 percent.

Although the unemployment rate has gone down in the Binghamton area, the region continues to struggle as manufacturing jobs continue to vanish.
