A Binghamton traffic improvement project that started over a year ago is nearly finished.

The final paving phase of work at the intersection of Front and Clinton streets is underway.

Crews completed paving of Front Street near the Broome County health department offices on Wednesday.

Paving of Clinton Street is expected to wrap up on Friday.

The $3 million project began in June of last year with the relocation of underground utilities. That cleared the way to lower the road surface to allow greater clearance for tall vehicles under the intersection's railroad bridges.

Mayor Richard David said the final paving at the intersection was delayed because the initial location of crosswalks was not in compliance with laws to provide access to those with disabilities.

Some of the crosswalk work was redone to ensure the city would receive some of the cost reimbursement it expects to obtain from the state.
