Police are investigating nearly a dozen home invasion incidents reported in Binghamton over the last few weeks.

The latest case happened at a downtown duplex late Friday night. Three men forced their way into a residence on Pine Street. A man who was in the home was hit over the head with a hammer. Another man and a woman who were in the residence were not hurt.

Detective Captain Jack Collins said police are following several leads in the most recent incident.

Collins estimated more than ten home invasion cases have been reported to city police over the past couple of months. He said there was no immediate indication that the Pine Street incident was connected with any of the others under investigation.

Collins said it appears that many of the incidents are drug-related. He said a recent home invasion in the First Ward probably involved the culprits going to the "wrong address."

While most of the reported incidents have occurred at night, one downtown home invasion last week happened around two o'clock in the afternoon.

Police face challenges in tracking down suspects in many of the cases because those whose homes were targeted don't cooperate with detectives.
