Binghamton Furniture Store Sets Up Temporary Home
Six months after a devastating fire, Ellis Brothers Contemporary Furniture has set up shop on Court Street in downtown Binghamton.
The landmark Water Street building which had housed the store for decades was gutted by a fast-moving blaze on April 30.
Richard Ellis says the Contemporary Furniture business started operating last week from a former bank building that is part of the MetroCenter complex. The furniture store is occupying about 7200 square feet of space on Court Street between Washington and State streets.
Ellis says the company had hoped to locate the store permanently at the site but the owner would not agree to that.
Instead, the store is expected to move to a four-story building at the corner of Court and Hawley streets next year.
Ellis expects that building - which once was home to a J.C. Penney store - could be in operation by next summer.
