Workers have started to tear down the historic pool in Binghamton's First Ward Park.

The pool, which is said to have opened on Memorial Day 1950, had not been used in recent years because city officials determined repair work would be too expensive.

The pool was built to honor area residents who served in World War Two.

Gorick Construction of Binghamton won the contract to demolish the facility.  The company is to be paid $64,000 for the project.

Although some First Ward residents have been hoping a new pool could be constructed in the park, city officials say various options are being explored.

There's a possibility a small pool or a "spray pad" could be built at the site.
