Fire chief Daniel Thomas said no one was home when the fire broke out. He said it was brought under control within a few minutes.

A dog on the second-floor of the burning house was rescued and was not hurt.

Fire marshal Daniel Eggleston said a man, woman and three children lived in the rental home. He said the Red Cross was called to provide them with clothing. They were expected to stay with relatives.

Eggleston said the blaze was not considered suspicious. He said it appeared to originate in the basement near a washing machine.
