Binghamton is one of 80 cities selected by the state to get funding for studying microgrids.

A microgrid is a smaller, separate power system aside from the main power grid that could keep power on to essential services like police and fire in an emergency.

Seven Stage One winners include Binghamton, Endicott, Bath, Elmira, Ithaca, Lansing and Sherburne.

Engineering assessments are now getting underway to determine what would need to be done to establish a microgrid.

The winning municipalities are being awarded $100,000 for their studies.
