The second shift in the City of Binghamton Public Works Department is getting new assignments when it’s not snowing.

Mayor Richard David says to fill down-time and increase productivity, the 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. shift is being instructed to collect garbage and abandoned shopping carts and to make hot asphalt patch when workers are not needed for their primary task of snow removal.

Residents who normally have garbage collection on Friday can put out trash between 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday for the night collection.

Officials say if residents miss the collection time or are unable to put out their garbage and recyclables between 6 and 8, the City will still have a crew collecting on Friday morning that can pick up anything missed Thursday night.

The change was started a couple weeks ago as a pilot program and continues until March 27th when the second shift schedule ends with the end of the snow season.

Anyone with questions can contact the Department of Public Works at (607)772-7021.
