The three-story 23,000-square-foot structure had been empty for years.

The building was acquired by New York State Electric and Gas when it took on natural gas customers served by Columbia Gas.

According to Broome County property records, NYSEG sold the site for $450,000 in November 2005.

Crews from Gorick Construction Company of Binghamton began tearing down the massive building at 265 Court Street last week.

A section of Liberty Street was closed to traffic while trucks hauled debris away from the demolition site. Traffic on Court Street was being maintained, although pedestrians were observed walking in an open lane of the street past the work site.

It's not known what may be done with the property when the demolition project has been completed.
