A downtown Binghamton church will continue to welcome people to a weekly community meal despite a violent incident at this week's dinner.

Rev. Kimberly Chastain, the pastor of the United Presbyterian Church of Binghamton, said the dinners will still be held.

A man who was attending Tuesday's dinner at the church at 42 Chenango Street was stabbed by another man during an argument over a chair. Police say 22-year-old Brandon Wolfran was charged with assault in connection with the attack.

Pastor Chastain said it was the first such incident at one of the community dinners. They've been held at the church since 1993.

Chastain said the church will not become less welcoming because of what appeared to be an isolated incident.

The pastor said work will continue to make the church "a place where everyone is welcome" and where "anyone can feel safe."

Between 100 and 150 people typically are served at the weekly dinner. Those who attend include children and seniors. Most of them are from the downtown neighborhoods near the church.
