In a Facebook post on December 13, 2017, Chief Joseph Zikuski of the Binghamton Police Department issued a reminder to Binghamton University students who live off campus to take proper safety measures, advising them that over the Thanksgiving break, several off-campus student apartments were burglarized.

While it appears that these burglaries were isolated to student apartments, residents should also heed the advice of Chief Zikuski, especially as we prepare to step into this Christmas holiday when many will be leaving their homes vacant and unattended.

Chief Zikuski strongly suggests,

... If you have air conditioners, please remove them from the windows especially those where there is access to a fire escape. If they cannot be removed, make sure they are securely fastened. Please take precautions in advance and if need be, contact your management company or landlord to make sure that the locks are in working order. Take any and all items of value with you since these are often attractive targets. i.e.: iPads, laptops game systems, jewelry, and currency.”

He continues,

If possible, ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on things during your time away. Conversely, if you are going to be staying home, keep an eye on your neighborhood and call 9-1-1 if you see anything suspicious. In the weeks leading up to the winter break, consider installing motion censored or timed lighting in and outside of your residence. This will create the illusion that someone is home.”
