Folks who visit some of downtown Binghamton's most popular gathering spots probably don't know about the truck that delivers something that ensures their beer looks and tastes perfect.

It's a tanker that regularly brings the carbon dioxide needed to help maintain proper carbonation for the draft beer systems used by pubs and restaurants.

Liquid bulk carbon dioxide delivery is becoming more common, so people who work or shop downtown may spot a vehicle operated by NuCO2 refilling tanks at brewpubs or bars.

The tanker that serves Binghamton is based in Syracuse. The other day, we spotted a thin hose running from the truck to a connector near the entrance to Galaxy Brewing Company on Court Street.

The carbon dioxide delivery took a matter of minutes to complete. Galaxy gets a refill every few weeks.

Carbonation systems are adjusted to provide proper amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen for different styles of beer.

The correct amount of carbonation is vital to keep beer from becoming flat or from pouring from the tap with too much foam.

If the carbonation system is functioning correctly, a beer lover won't give it a second thought. But if there's a probem with the gas blend and pressure, the brew you like won't be quite right.

Binghamton On Tap will be held February 21. The event will take place at the DoubleTree By Hilton at 225 Water Street. Tickets are available online.
