The Binghamton Bearcats opened the 2018 America East Championship Softball Tournament today (Wednesday) with a 3-1 win over the Maine Black Bears at the Bearcats Sports Complex.  Rayn Gibson went the distance, giving up six hits and striking out one batter to earn the win. Her record improves to 7-12 on the season.  The only run scored by the Black Bears came on a solo home run from third baseman Alyssa Derrick in the sixth inning.

Jessica Rutherford, Jill Bovitt and Lauren Martinez led the offense with two hits apiece. Lauren Martinez slammed a solo home run for the Bearcats in the sixth inning.

This is the third consecutive seaon that Binghamton has hosted the America East tournament and fourth overall.  Binghamton plays again on Thursday morning at 11 A.M. against the Albany Great Danes. Albany is the regular season champion in America East.  Heading into tomorrow's game the Bearcats are 10-9 versus conference opponents while Albany is 13-4.

The tournament continues into Saturday.  All games are going to be played at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
