The 2012 road construction season is in full swing, but there are big plans for the Greater Binghamton area for 2014 through 2018.

The Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study Planning Committee has given unanimous approval to the blueprint for improvements to area roads, bridges and transit systems using federal funding over the next few years. The Policy Committee of the BMTS is scheduled to vote in the next few days to adopt the improvement program proposal.

The Greater Binghamton area is expected to get $65.3 million for transportation projects just for next year.

The majority of the project costs are typically covered by federal and state money. But municipalities have to pitch in for the remaining share.
