Gas prices below two dollars a gallon are becoming more common across the Southern Tier.

Three places along Route 11 in Whitney Point have been displaying prices of under two bucks for several days. The price slipped another three cents - down to $1.949 - on Tuesday, which is the weekly "gas sale" promotion day for two of the stations.

An employee at one of the Whitney Point stores said gasoline customers thought it was "so awesome" they can put ten gallons in their vehicle's tank for under $20.

In Tioga County, Scott Smith and Son in Owego posted a cash price of $1.959. A woman working in the company's office said "we like it." She said the customers have been happy as they've seen pump prices continue to decrease.

The lowest prices in the region right now appears to be in Cortland, where a Citgo station dropped its price to $1.899 on Monday. One worker told WNBF News that she's happy with the low price and hopes the trend will continue, noting gas prices were above $3 a gallon when she started driving a few years ago. Two nearby Cortland Kwik Fill stations have now matched the Citgo price.

Most stations around Broome County are still selling gas for more than $2 a gallon. A check of gas stations along Route 17C - Main Street - between Binghamton and Endicott Tuesday morning showed only one station selling regular for a cash price of $1.999. The highest posted price of $2.299 was posted at a station on Binghamton's West Side.

According to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge report, the average price for a gallon of regular in the Binghamton market was just under $2.12. That's down from an average of $2.23 a month ago and $2.39 a year ago.

The AAA survey indicates the Binghamton area's highest recorded average price occurred in July 2008 when prices peaked at about $4.20 a gallon.

With global oil production and supplies high, petroleum industry analysts motorists likely will see relatively cheap gas prices this year, barring any major unforeseen events.
