The Binghamton Bearcats softball team is getting ready for their season opener this Friday when they travel to the Lamar Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas.  The Bearcats meet Alabama A & M in their opener on Friday afternoon.  BU is scheduled to play five games in the weekend tournament.

Big things are expected from the Bearcats again this season.  In the annual preseason poll of conference coaches Binghamton was picked to win the regular season championship.  The America East conference championship tournament will be held May 9-12  at a site to be announced.

The Bearcats have some outstanding talent returning.  Outfielder Jessica Rutherford, third baseman Kate Richard and second baseman Stephanie Bielec all have earned first-team all-conference honors in the last two seasons.  Rutherford has twice been named to the NFCA All-Region and ECAC All-Star teams while Richard was picked as a member of the ECAC All-Star squad last year.

The Bearcats have a pair of pitchers and a catcher returning who were named to the America East All-Rookie Team last year.  Pitchers Rozlyn Price and Rayn Gibson lead the pitching staff while Sara Herskowitz looks to anchor the defense from behind the plate.

Binghamton is scheduled to play its first home game on Saturday April 7 versus the UMBC Retrievers.  That kicks off the America East season.
