Jessica Rutherford, freshman outfielder with the Binghamton Bearcats softball team,  has been named the America East Rookie of the Year.  The award was announced before the conference tournament begins at Stony Brook.

Rutherford is currently ninth in the conference in batting average at .352.  She has hit three triples which ranks her third in America East.  During the regular season Rutherford earned Rookie of the Week honors on April 20 and April 27.

The Bearcats tradition of excellence continues with Rutherford.  She is the third BU rookie to win the conference award in the past six years.  Jessica Phillips won the honor in 2010 and  Lisa Cadogan was named the winner in 2013.

Rutherford leads her Bearcats into the America East Tournament today versus the Albany Great Danes.  BU is a third seed while Albany is a number two seed.  All games will be played at host Stony Broook.
