One of sports true legends, Meadowlark Lemon, who for better than two decades starred with the Harlem Globetrotters, helped kickoff festivities today for the 11th Annual Jim "Mudcat" Grant All -Star Golf Tournament sponsored by Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. The tournament provides financial support for four local organizations including: The Broome County Urban League,The Boys and Girls Club of Binghamton, Catholic Charities of Broome County and the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW). Grant, the "Black Aces" and Security Mutual Life President and CEO Bruce Boyea founded the event 11 years ago.
Lemon combined great basketball skills with plenty of fun to delight millions of fans in the United States and in over 90 other countries around the world as the star of the Harlem Globetrotters. As his playing career wound down he turned to the Ministry to carry his spiritual beliefs to his old and new fans around the world. While here to promote tomorrow's golf tournament he visited several churches to carry his message to the people in attendance. He also was a guest today on Binghamton Now with host Roger Neel on Newsradio 1290 WNBF. The Jim "Mudcat" Grant Golf Tournament will be played tomorrow at the Links at Hiawatha Landing. Close to three dozen celebrities will take part including Syracuse Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim, Binghamton University Basketball Coach Tommy Dempsey,former Syracuse basketball standout Roosevelt Bouie and former New York Yankees Steve Kraly and Cliff Johnson.
